Spanish Davis Cup captain David Ferrer has suggested that Carlos Alcaraz needs to learn how to handle losses in order to follow the same path as the Big 3 (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic). Ferrer has reunited with the World No. 3 for Davis Cup duty.

Ferrer has lost to the Big 3 as much as anyone, including a 0-17 record against Federer in his career. Therefore, he wants his compatriot to learn how to cope with major losses in his career.

When you lose, everything is always dramatized. Now he asked for a rest, reset himself. I complied with all that and I am completely calm.

Alcaraz’s form has dipped over the past two seasons after significant defeats. In 2023, he was on a roll until Wimbledon, but a devastating loss to Djokovic in the Cincinnati Open final caused a decline in his level. He didn’t win another tournament for the rest of the year.

He is so good because he demands a lot from himself, but he has to learn and lose. People outside of tennis think he can win all the time. But that’s impossible. Even Rafa, Roger, and Novak, the best in history, couldn’t do that.

In 2024, he was in good form for most of the summer, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back. However, a loss in the Olympic Singles Gold medal match significantly affected his level yet again. He has lost three of his last four matches, including a second-round defeat at the US Open.

[The North-American swing] was a tour that I hoped would be better. I haven’t managed to play at the level I would have liked. But in the end it’s very difficult to perform at the level you want every day and you have to be prepared to accept things as they come.

Following his Olympic Gold medal defeat to Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz lost in the opening round of Cincinnati to Gael Monfils. He then followed that with a second-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open.

I think I lacked preparation after a very intense summer, with few days of rest, disconnection and training for the American tour and to get there in the best possible way. It’s an experience from which to learn for the future.
Carlos Alcaraz added

Alcaraz’s decline in form is largely due to a demanding schedule in the summer. The Spaniard won Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back and reached the Olympic Gold medal match in Paris. As a result, Alcaraz came to the North American tour underprepared and saw his results suffer. However, tennis fans expect him to return to winning ways at the Davis Cup. He will face Tomas Machac in the Davis Cup on Wednesday, September 11.
