The 2024 offseason saw a massive change in the MLB. The Athletics dropped the name “Oakland” from their name and moved away from the city. After that, they have made some big money moves. General Manager David Forst has claimed that it is “finally time” for the A’s to compete year after year after extending the contract of Brent Rooker.
Before the contract extension of Rooker, the A’s spent heavily on landing free-agent pitcher Luis Severino. The former New York Yankees and New York Mets pitcher was roped in on a 3-year $67 million deal. This was the largest contract offered to any player in the A’s history.
The Athletics recently extended the contract of Rooker on a five-year $60 million deal. The 30-year-old had an impressive 2024 campaign and was one of the stand-out players of the A’s.
He hit 39 home runs and batted in 112 runs with a batting average of .293 as the A’s improved on from their 2023 record and finished with a 69-93 record.
Though that record is still not good enough, the Athletics are heading in the right direction. As per GM Frost, the extension of Rooker suggests that it is time for the team to start competing year in and year out.
Brent Rooker left excited after long contract extension
In November 2022, Brent Rooker was claimed off the waivers by the Athletics. Since then, the outfielder has come up through the ranks of the team and has established himself as one of the best players of the team. After signing a long contract extension, he shared his excitement on social media.
Rooker has been highly active on social media. He was joined by his wife Allie, during the official contract extension. Sharing an image of that on X, Rooker spoke about his journey in baseball.
My professional baseball journey has been a unique one. Its been a longer road than most and filled with a lot of highs and lows, a lot of bouncing around and a lot of uncertainty. The one constant that I’ve had throughout all of that time is a group of people around me that… pic.twitter.com/i0B7TdYUz8

Apart from these two moves, the A’s have added the experience of Jeffery Springs and Gio Urshela to the squad as well. With their last playoff appearance coming in 2020, the Athletics are keen to end this drought before making their way to Las Vegas in 2028.
