On Tuesday, a scary moment unfolded during the Cleveland Guardians-Detroit Tigers game at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Guardians’ designated hitter (DH) David Fry got smacked by a 99 mph fastball in the face by Tarik Skubal that left him down on the ground.

The Guardians and the Tigers kicked off an important 3-game set on Tuesday. After winning 15 of their 17 matches, the hosts found themselves 1 game behind their opponents in the AL Central division race.

The incident regarding Fry took place in the 6th inning. With his team down 2-1 and having runners on the corners, Fry would try to bunt down the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner.

In the process, Skubal ended up throwing a 99.1 mph fastball, which hit Fry in the face. The ball, which was later ruled a foul ball, would end up knocking the Guardians’ star down on the ground.

Skubal himself was shaken up by the incident. The Tigers’ ace pitcher would toss his glove and his hat and cover his face with his hands. Check out a video regarding this from X below:

Fortunately, Fry was able to get back to his feet on his own and was later carted off the field. He would even gesture a thumbs up towards Skubal to let him know that he was fine and waved his hand towards the fans.

George Valera would finish the at-bat of Fry and was struck out. The Guardians were able to put up 2 more runs in the 6th inning and turned the game around to take a 3-2 lead.

While speaking to the reporters after the game, the 28-year-old expressed that it was a “really tough” moment for him.

It’s really tough. I’ve already reached out to him. I’m sure his phone is blowing up. Just want to make sure he’s alright. Obviously, he seemed like he was OK coming off the field, and hopefully it stays that way. I know sometimes with those things, they can change, so hopefully he’s alright.

David Fry is currently hospitalized and will undergo further evaluation. The Guardians are likely to announce an update regarding him on Wednesday morning.

Before this incident, Skubal had already made a throwing error at first base. While trying to field a bunt by Angel Martinez, he ended up throwing the ball over the head of Spencer Torkelson at first base, which allowed Steven Kwan to reach third and Martinez to reach second base, respectively.

Jose Ramirez then hit an infield single to put the Guardians on board and cut the deficit to 1 run. It was after this run that the Fry moment took place.

On a 2-2 count to Valero, Skubal would throw a wild pitch which allowed the Guardians to tie up the game. Gabriel Arias would then hit another infield single that saw Ramirez reach home plate to turn the game around at 3-2.

The Guardians added two more runs in the 7th inning to extend their lead to 5-2. The win saw the Guardians match the record of the Tigers at 85-72.

As they won the season series against them, the Guardians now lead the AL Central as they own the tiebreaker. With 2 more games remaining against the Tigers, the hosts would be hoping to sweep them again and claim the division title from an improbable position.
