David Goffin

David Goffin lifted his fifth career ATP Title and his first since 2017 after he claimed the Montpellier Open title on Sunday. The Belgian defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in a thrilling three set encounter to end his title drought. Goffin won by a scoreline of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
As the scoreline suggests, the Belgian second seed had to produce a remarkable comeback to outlast Bautista Agut at Open Sud de France. It will be a huge morale boosting victory for Goffin who will look forward to the rest of the year with optimism.
Goffin defeats Bautista Agut in three sets
David Goffin conceded the first set, by a slender margin, losing 7-5 to the Spaniard. However, Goffin produced his best tennis when required, winning the next two sets convincingly. In the last two sets, the second seed dropped just six games in total which was an incredible performance.
Goffin served well, hitting 13 aces compared to Agut’s seven aces. It was the win percentage on Goffin’s serve that made a huge impact. He won over 70% of his points on first serve, more than Agut’s tally of 52%. The Belgian made most of his break point opportunities, converting four out of the seven chances he had up his sleeve.
Throughout the week, Goffin played high quality tennis, defeating some tough opponents like Lorenzo Sonego, Egor Gerasimov and Bautista-Agut in the finals.
