David Goffin expressed his frustration after someone from the crowd on Court 14 threw chewing gum at him during his first-round match with home favorite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Tuesday (May 28th). The match lasted for three hours and 35 minutes, with the Belgian veteran winning with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 6-3.
After getting “insulted for three and a half hours,” Goffin simply put his finger behind his ear to “tease the crowd“. He did not like the way the crowd behaved and believes these tennis fans would soon start to become like football fans.
It’s becoming football, soon there will be smoke b*mbs, hooligans and there will be fights in the stands. It’s starting to become ridiculous.David Goffin in the press conference
He wants these fans to stop causing trouble and create an atmosphere where players can play without losing their focus. As getting angry could have distracted him when someone from the crown spat out chewing gum at him, he stayed calm and continued to play.
Someone spat out their chewing gum at me. It [the match] was getting complicated. That’s why I wanted to stay calm.David Goffin added
Goffin will next face Alexander Zverev, who knocked out 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the first round in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic was booed for taking time to clean himself
Even three-time French Open champion Novak Djokovic has to deal with loud boos from the local crowd. During his first-round match against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert, the World No.1 tumbled on the ground near the net. As he started cleaning himself, a section of the crowd jeered at him on the Philippe-Chatrier court.
Last year, he expressed his dismay over the crowd’s behavior who booed him for taking a medical timeout during his match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
I think the majority of people come to enjoy tennis or support one or the other player. But there are people who love to boo every single thing you do.Novak Djokovic said
The 37-year-old will next lock horns with Roberto Carballes Baena on Thursday (May 30th) for the third time in his career. Amidst his struggle to get back to his old self, Djokovic will be fighting to save himself from getting knocked out of a tournament without reaching the final for the sixth time this year.
