The MLB world received a major shock a few days ago when the Boston Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. On Friday, MLB Hall of Famer David Ortiz took a subtle jab at the player following this development.
Devers, who had established himself as one of the top members of the Red Sox team, was traded on Sunday. The 3B/DH was given away by the team in exchange for 4 players to the Giants, a few hours after the team swept the New York Yankees in a 3-game series.
Ortiz, who had highly spoken of Devers in the past, seemingly threw a shade at him. In his Instagram stories, ‘Big Papi‘ would label the Red Sox as the “best organization in the world” and drop another message alongside that.
The thing is that to have thing some like this at boston you have to just not be a hitter you have to be the full package a all the way around player…. go sox

There had been some issues between Devers and the Red Sox management. Earlier this season, the 3-time MLB All-Star refused to give up his 3rd base position after the team acquired Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman.
However, the team would force him to be the designated hitter (DH) and give up this position. He would later be asked to play as the 1st baseman as Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury. However, Devers refused to do this as well.
Speaking of Ortiz, he did make some public comments regarding this trade. The Red Sox legend expressed that “ego” is one’s worst enemy and used this development to warn other players that nobody was indispensable.
Rafael Devers explained why he is ready to play 1st base for SF Giants
Rafael Devers caught huge flak when he straight up refused to play in the 1st base position for the Boston Red Sox. However, the player is ready to play in this position for his new team. On Friday, he explained the reason behind this.

While speaking to the media, the 28-year-old simply explained that he would played 1st base for the Red Sox, if they asked him in Spring Training. During this period, he was asked to put his glove away and play only as the DH, which was something that he did not want.
I would say that I had some good numbers over at Boston, and I think that I do feel that I have earned some respect. If they would had asked me at the beginning of Spring Training, yes I would have.
Reporter: "For a Red Sox fan who might say 'why wouldn't he play first base for us but he'll play first base for the Giants,' what would you say?"

Devers has started taking reps at the first base position. For the moment, he is expected to continue to play as the designated hitter for the Giants. Once he is ready, he will be deployed at first base for the first time in his career.
Rafael Devers faced off against the Red Sox for the first time
Rafael Devers had been part of the Boston Red Sox since 2017 and had made a huge mark on the team. Despite that, his relationship with the team came to an end on messy terms as he got traded while being in the 2nd year of his huge 10-year contract extension. On Friday, he faced off his former team for the first time.

After losing the 3-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, the SF Giants welcomed the Red Sox to Oracle Park. This meant that Devers would go up against his ex-teammates just a few days after being traded away.
In his first outing against the Red Sox, Devers struggled heavily. The Dominican international went 0-for-5 in his first appearance against his former employees and failed to make any impact for his new organization.

This performance brought down his batting average to .267 for the season. The Giants would end up losing the game 7-5 and have now lost 4 of their last 5 matches, leaving them with a 42-34 record, 4.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings.
