Last week, the Juan Soto free agency saga came to an end. The New York Mets landed the Dominican slugger on a massive 15-year $765 million deal. This meant that the New York Yankees lost out on Soto to their crosstown rivals. Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz has now trolled them for this.
The sweepstakes for Soto crossed the $750 million mark in the final days of the deal. The race for him came down between the Yankees and the Mets. The outfielder chose the Mets and did not re-sign with the Yankees on a 16-year $760 million deal.
Ortiz’s former team, the Red Sox was also involved in the race to sign him. Reports had claimed that the AL East side had made a good first impression on him.
Ortiz had also spoken on this deal and claimed that Soto could be his successor if he joined them. While the MLB Hall of Famer did not get to see that, he did not hold back from taking a shot at the Yankees.
On Monday, Soto shared a reel on his Instagram account and wrote, “A new chapter begins“. Ortiz would comment on this reel and poke fun at the Bronx Bombers by using John Sterling‘s beloved “The Yankees win” call after every Yankees win by changing one word.
The……. Yankees lose

This is not the first time “Big Papi” has used this phrase though. On several occasions, he has used these words to take a dig at the Yankees for losing games. During the 2024 World Series, he would happily use this phrase while sitting alongside Yankee greats Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez at the MLB on Fox show.
David Ortiz comments on Juan Soto signing with the NY Mets
While David Ortiz may have poked fun at the New York Yankees for losing out on Juan Soto, he was a bit disappointed to see him go to Queens instead of joining the Boston Red Sox. The 49-year-old admitted that he wanted Soto in Boston and tried to work out a deal.

However, the Dominican international was not surprised with Soto’s choosing the Mets over the Yankees and called it a business move that was best for him and his family. The 10-time MLB All-Star would cheer him for his contract, call it “well deserved” and wish him well.
We wanted him in Boston. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out… It’s a business. It’s always a business and he’s got to go wherever is best for him and his family.

After losing Soto, the Yankees have started working on a Plan B and have added pitchers Max Fried and Devin Williams through free agency and trade respectively. The team is reported to be working on a trade deal to bring Cody Bellinger to the Bronx.
As for Ortiz’s beloved Red Sox, they recently acquired Garrett Crochet through a trade deal with the Chicago White Sox. They are expected to make a few more moves in this offseason.
