On Sunday, the MLB world was left stunned in silence as the Boston Red Sox shockingly traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. A day later, ‘Big PapiDavid Ortiz reacted to this matter and issued a warning to other players, claiming that “nobody is indispensable.

Devers had established himself as one of the top members of the Red Sox clubhouse in recent years. However, the Dominican international had some problems with the team management this year.

In the spring training, Devers was asked to shift from his 3rd base position and become a designated hitter (DH) to allow Alex Bregman to take the field. The 3-time MLB All-Star would decline this and made his feelings known publicly.

While he later had to settle for the DH spot, the team would once again ask him to change position and urge him to take up the 1st base position following the injury to Triston Casas. Devers again turned down this offer.

Despite these off-field issues, Devers had found his form with the bat again and was one of the top performers for the Red Sox offensively. On Sunday, he hit another home run against the New York Yankees. His home run helped the team win 2-0 and saw them sweep their rivals. Hours later, Devers was officially traded to the SF Giants.

In an interview with baseball content creator Yancen Pujols, Red Sox legend David Ortiz expressed that players need to understand the situation and keep their ‘ego‘ in check.

Players need to take this as an example. Nobody is indispensable. … You need to be smart and you need to understand the situation. Your worst enemy is your ego.

Devers was in the 2nd year of his massive $313.5 million contract extension, which he signed with the Red Sox in 2023. The SF Giants will now cover the entirety of that contract. In exchange for Devers, the Red Sox received Jordan HicksKyle HarrisonJose Bello and James Tibbs III.

In an interview with Hector Gomez, Ortiz said he wrote to Devers many times to give him some advice. However, the 3B/DH almost never returned his messages.

You can’t imagine how many times I wrote to Devers trying to give him advice, but unfortunately, he has communication problems. He almost never returned my messages, but I don’t blame him. He’s a good guy, but he definitely needs to improve his communication. He should find an advisor to help him with that.

Ortiz is one of the top players in Red Sox history. Having spent 14 seasons with the team, the DH won 3 World Series titles with them and was a key figure in the team’s rise to success.
