Arsenal picked up an emphatic 2-0 victory over Unai Emery and Aston Villa at Villa Park. The Gunners however, were made to work for the win as the hosts stood firm up until the 67th minute. However, Mikel Arteta‘s men finally found the breakthrough, courtesy of Belgian forward Leandro Trossard. Arsenal also have David Raya to thank for a masterclass in goal against the Villans.
Raya has arguably ‘replaced’ Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal‘s No.1 in official competition. The Spaniard has been so good for the Gunners that Ramsdale is now considering a move away from the club. Raya’s brilliance was on display as Arsenal picked up their second win of the season in style. His moment came in the early minutes of the second half, when the score was still 0-0.
Amadou Onana‘s shot from outside the box took a massive deflection before hitting the crossbar. Raya leapt backwards to try and get his hand on the ball, but failed to do so. With the ball falling back into the danger area, Raya was nowhere to be seen. With his goal unguarded, the crowd at Villa Park thought the hosts had scored on the rebound.
However, in a superhuman effort, Raya got a hand to the rebound header by Ollie Watkins. Raya also won the Player of the Match award for his efforts.
Fans react to David Raya’s stunning save against Aston Villa
Arsenal walked away from their encounter with Aston Villa with all three points and a clean sheet. Raya took center stage in the second half, although Emiliano Martinez also made a breathtaking block to keep out Bukayo Saka in the first half.
On social media, a fan commented that Raya totally deserves his spot in the starting line-up over Ramsdale and his performances vouch for him. A few were convinced that it was already the save of the season and that he is the best shot stopper in the Premier League.
Fans also opted to make fun of Watkins for missing an ‘open’ goal and not putting Villa 1-0 up on the scoreboard. A supporter claimed that Arsenal are slowly becoming the best side in the League thanks to them having amazing players in almost every single position.
Another moment from the game also made headlines as Ben White fired the ball in John McGinn‘s direction after the latter did the same to William Saliba. Arsenal took the lead through Leandro Trossard and then pulled away with all three points thanks to Thomas Partey‘s effort in the 77th minute. After two wins, Arsenal are currently third in the League.
