Manchester United will be blessed to count their No.2 keeper Dean Henderson as a starting goalkeeper as he is that talented. The England ‘keeper made his name known after performing well on loan at Sheffield United. Now he has carried over the same form when playing as Manchester United’s No.1 in the absence of David de Gea. What now for the back-up keeper who is too good to be a back-up keeper?
Dean Henderson needs to show ambition and ensure his worth is known
Dean Henderson is too good to be a back-up goalkeeper, let’s make that known now. Barring a few mistakes which every ‘keeper in the world does, Henderson has consistently been a safe pair of hands. Against Manchester City- which is the most dangerous attacking team in the Premier League, he made 6 saves to get a clean sheet. He also started the move for Luke Shaw’s goal with a delicious long throw.
Now the question has to be asked- where should Dean Henderson be next season? Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has stuck to David De Gea for most parts of the season and it can be expected that it will be the same after he returns. Dean Henderson cannot be stuck around waiting for the random opportunities to fall into his lap when he is talented. Unless the club can assure him that he will be given a starting role, it is not a wise choice for him to stay at Manchester United.
If he wants to challenge for the No.1 role at England where he will face competition from both Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope, he needs to have a starting role. David De Gea is 30 years old now and Manchester United will have to analyze what they want to do. They have a choice and they must make the wise decision now in order to not regret it in the future.
