Decision on allowing domestic spectators for Tokyo Olympics to be taken in June

Even as the scheduled due for the Tokyo Olympics is drawing near, a cloud of doubt remains as to how the Games would be conducted smoothly amidst the raging COVID-19 pandemic. The Games, which were initially supposed to take place in 2020, were postponed to this year, with the hope that the pandemic would subside and that vaccination would be done. Despite all of these, the pandemic has continued to wreak havoc.

Amidst the rising costs, with the Games already the most expensive in history (even before they have got underway at that), there are plenty of other things concerning the organizers. A decision on whether or not to allow domestic spectators for the games is chief among them. The decision on whether or not foreign spectators would be allowed was already made in March where it was decided that it wouldn’t the case.

Organizers release statement on decision regarding domestic spectators

The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics released a statement today about their decision regarding domestic spectators and said, “It was agreed that a general decision on spectator capacity in venues will be made in April, with the understanding that COVID-19 circumstances may necessitate a flexible approach.”

Before the statement was released, another statement was made which was that no athlete who is set to take part in the Games has requested for pre-Olympics vaccination yet. The statement said that the issue of vaccination as well as the decision on spectators would be taken by June in association with the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee.
