Losing is never fun in any aspect of life. It stings, especially when one puts in their blood, sweat, and tears toward achieving a goal but fall just one step short of it. This is a feeling that one team goes through every year in the Super Bowl but for Deebo Samuel and the San Francisco 49ers, it is a pain that they have experienced twice in recent history and all to the same team.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the 49ers in 2019 and last season to win the Super Bowl. The game was closer in 2024, both sides put their best foot forward and sent the match to overtime. However, despite gaining possession of the ball first, San Francisco managed to get in field goal range and score but Patrick Mahomes sealed the game by orchestrating a touchdown drive in the final seconds of the game.
That experience haunts Deebo Samuel to date. The wide receiver revealed the aftermath of the loss on the St Brown Podcast with Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown.
Not gonna lie, losing the Super Bowl, it puts you in depression. You go months without talking to people, wanting to be seen…Losing the Super Bowl is one of the worst feelings ever. Think about it in our position. We just went through camp, we just went through the whole season, and we got here, we lose, and now you back to work in 3 weeks…Losing the Super Bowl is crazy. I lost in the Super Bowl twice to the same team.

From his statement, it can be inferred that Samuel was frustrated by this loss, and while to some, merely making it to the Super Bowl may classify as a successful season, to athletes stepping on the gridiron, it still counts as a failure if one does not leave with the Lombardi.
The San Francisco 49ers regressed after their trip to the Super Bowl last season
In many ways, it hurts more to lose in the Super Bowl compared to losing a regular season game or at any other point in the playoffs. This is because when a team is eliminated from playoff contention, the players understand they have work to do and begin to look forward to the next season. However, that is not the case for a team that goes all the way to the Super Bowl.

San Francisco was just one step away from winning the title that all their players dreamt of hoisting. The amount of hope and expectation reaches a peak. Then despite the best effort and hard work, one falls short. It is devastating for an athlete both mentally and physically.
Football is a demanding sport and it requires athletes to put in the work year-around. To reach the Super Bowl once alone is a Herculean task but to lose that game and then think of the work that went in, and realize it needs to be done again with no guarantees is a form of frustration few can relate to.
This year has not been kind to San Francisco and Deebo Samuel. The team’s Super Bowl hangover lasted the entire regular season and the added woes of mounting injuries resulted in the team being knocked out of playoff contention. The wide receiver has had a forgettable season with 51 receptions, 670 yards, and 3 touchdowns, the only highlights that Samuel had were of his dropped catches.
