In the days leading up to the San Francisco 49ers’ Thursday night showdown with the Los Angeles Rams, Deebo Samuel didn’t hide his frustration about his lack of involvement in the offense. The star wide receiver openly admitted he wanted to see more action and hoped for opportunities to make an impact. However, when the moment came, Samuel fell short.
Midway through the third quarter, with the Niners facing a third-and-4 from the Rams’ 35-yard line, quarterback Brock Purdy delivered a perfectly placed pass to Samuel on a slant route. Samuel easily beat his defender off the line and had nothing but an open field between him and the end zone. But in a shocking twist, he dropped the ball.
Instead of a touchdown, the 49ers settled for a field goal. The missed opportunity loomed large as the game progressed, with the Niners ultimately falling 12-6 to the Rams. The loss all but sealed San Francisco’s fate, leaving them with less than a 1 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to Next Gen Stats.
The botched catch was emblematic of a tough season for the 49ers, who have struggled with consistency and missed opportunities. For Samuel, it was a harsh reminder of the pressure to perform in critical moments and how one play can define the outcome of a game.
Deebo Samuel humbled by football gods
In the wake of his social media comments and continued struggles on the field, it seems Deebo Samuel may be experiencing a reckoning with the highs and lows of professional football. While his frustration is evident, the past five weeks have highlighted the challenges of maintaining consistency in a league where every play counts.
On the latest episode of the Nightcap podcast with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, Sharpe seized the moment to highlight Samuel’s recent struggles.
During Thursday’s game, Samuel was targeted seven times, tying with Jauan Jennings for the second-most on the team, trailing only George Kittle. However, he managed to catch just three of those targets, including a critical drop in the third quarter that likely would have resulted in a touchdown.
To compound the 49ers’ woes, Thursday night’s game was pivotal for their postseason hopes. With the loss, San Francisco now holds a 6-8 record, sitting 2.5 games behind the division-leading Seattle Seahawks.
