The San Francisco 49ers traded Deebo Samuel after the wide receiver spent six seasons in the Bay Area. He is now part of the Washington Commanders roster, earning a base salary of $17 million.

Recently, a Samuel video from the Commanders’ training camp made waves on the internet. Wearing his new gear and number jersey, Samuel worked on a few routes.

However, hawk-eyed fans noticed something else. Samuel’s movement seemed a lot slower than everyone is familiar with.

A section of concerned fans speculated whether he carried an injury, while others deduced that the 29-year-old looked puffier than usual.

Fans on social media call out Deebo Samuel for gaining weight during the offseason

A lot of players let loose during the offseason. They travel, party, and eat to their heart’s content. The eating part is mostly limited to the offensive linemen because they must eat large portions to keep their strength intact, even when they are not training.

Receivers are a different breed. They prefer eating healthy and gaining some muscle to run faster. Samuel should not be an exception to that rule, especially since he’s at a new organization and must prove himself.

However, adamant fans declared that Samuel moved more slowly due to gaining unnecessary weight before the OTAs.

George Kittle saw fans criticizing Samuel’s movement and decided to step in, even though they are no longer teammates. Kittle replied to the post.

It’s called group install when players jog through plays. Knock it off.

13-year NFL veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner backed Kittle.

Samuel appeared in 81 games for the 49ers after they drafted him in the second round in 2019. He caught 334 passes for 4792 yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 202 rushes for 1143 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in the regular season.

In the playoffs, Samuel caught 46 passes for 638 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games. His best numbers came in 2021 when Samuel went 1405 yards from 77 receptions (league-leading 18.2 yards per catch) and 6 touchdowns.

Samuel signed a three-year, $73.5 million contract with the 49ers in 2022. It guaranteed him $58.1 million. He was still under contract with the Niners when they traded him to the Commanders for a fifth-round selection, which they used on drafting running back Jordan James.

The Commanders play three preseason games against the Patriots, Bengals, and Ravens before kicking off their 2025 NFL campaign against NFC East rivals the New York Giants on September 7.
