This week the San Francisco 49ers traded away Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. According to some insider reports, the ending between the two parties wasn’t as amicable as it seemed on the surface.
Renowned 49ers expert Tim Kawakami speculated that a section of the brass was unhappy with Deebo gaining over twenty pounds in the latter half of the season. In addition, he diverted the majority of his attention to growing his podcast rather than focusing on playing football.
These allegations were never proven, and Samuel left to join the Commanders. On Sunday, the 29-year-old posted a message addressed to the 49ers organization, especially to head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.
49ers know where I stand with them and it’s nothing but love. Love John and Kyle to death no bad blood no way shape or form. They know I’m more than appreciative of everything they done for me as a player and a man nothing but love.

This message proves that there’s no hard feelings between Samuel and the Niners. They can now focus on dealing with Brandon Aiyuk before drawing up a plan for next season.
49ers options at receiver after Deebo Samuel’s trade
By trading Samuel, the Niners brought down their average age and with Aiyuk being next in line, it will go down even further. However, the answer that every Niners fan wants to know is who will be the starting receiver in 2025.

The answer is already in the team. Jauan Jennings slowly became the second in line for Shanahan’s attack in 2024. With Aiyuk in rehab and Samuel out of favor, Jennings made the most of the increased reps. He signed a two-year, $15.4 million extension and caught a career-high 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns from 10 starts.
The Niners drafted Rickey Pearsall 31st overall in the 2024 draft. He was a bit-part player, contributing to 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns.
Another player who could take the next step is Terique Owens, son of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens.
I’ve heard they don’t think they need to get a better wide receiver. I’ve heard they like the guys they got. I’ll tell you the name I’ve heard, Terique Owens. They think he was good in practice squad.

The Niners also have the 17th and 48th overall picks on the first two days. They can draft a young receiver, but a tackle and a linebacker are more of a priority for them if Dre Greenlaw enters free agency. Aiyuk is still on the roster, and until the Niners brass deals with him first, they will not be able to make the next move.
