Deepak Punia Bows Out of Semifinals; Will fight for Bronze
Deepak Punia
Deepak Punia secured his place in the semifinals of wrestling at Tokyo Olympics, after an incredible last minute move which allowed him to win 6-3. The semifinals however, would not be easy at all, as he faced David Taylor of USA, who would give him tough competition.
The bout started off, and neither opponent was ready to move. Deepak Punia unfortunately was no match for David Taylor who took him down several times and rolled him over in the first minutes itself, and took 10 points in the first minute of the first bout.
Punia did not have a chance to even get settled, as Taylor had already taken control of the match and won by technical superiority. It was all over for the young Indian as he would not be able to fight for the gold medal.
Deepak Punia Will Fight for Bronze; Taylor Favourite for Gold
All is not over for Punia, as he will be able to fight for a bronze medal through repachage matches that will be held tomorrow.
Taylor will go on to face Iran’s Hassan Yazdanicharati, who won the other semifinal with a score 7-1. It will be a tough fight for Taylor, as Hassan is the 2016 Rio Olympics Gold Medal winner, but in the 76kg weight category. Taylor is no less however, as he is the 2018 World Champion. Hassan seems to have the upper hand, as he is the 2019 World Champion, but Taylor will give him a tough fight for the bronze medal.
