Gokulam Kerala sign Deepak Singh from NEROCA FC

Reigning I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC have signed right-back Takhellambam Deepak Singh from Manipuri club NEROCA FC. He would be considered to be a like-for-like replacement for departing right-back Sebastian Thangmuansang, who left the club to join ISL club Odisha FC on a free transfer this summer.

Deepak Singh started his professional career in the sport playing for TRAU FC and soon gained a transfer to semi-professional side NISA Manipur, which competes in the Manipur State League. His performances impressed the Manipur-based I-league side, NEROCA FC, who signed him on a free transfer in August 2020.

Over the course of the recently concluded season, he had 11 appearances for the club as NEROCA finished tenth in the regular season. He is known for his speed and agility, and will be a major addition to I-league champions’ squad. He is the fourth player announced by Gokulam Kerala ahead of the upcoming season after defenders Muhammed Uvais and Muhammed Rafi, and left-winger Krishnananda Singh Khundongbam.

In an interview conducted after signing for the club, Deepak Singh said, “We have all seen how Gokulam won the I-League. The brand of football they played is inspiring and it will be an honour for me to represent them next season. I will try my best for the club and its fans.”

Asked to comment upon the signing, the CEO of Gokulam Kerala FC, Dr B. Ashok Kumar, added his thoughts too: “This lad was under our radar ever since the start of last I-League season 2020-21. His consistency coupled with energy and enthusiasm earned him a berth in our current squad. As a right-wing-back we expect him to raise his bar and perform better this season than the former players.”

The president of Gokulam Kerala FC, VC Praveen, said, “Deepak is an industrious player and he will provide healthy competition to the full-back position in the team. The player has impressed us during the last I-League season and we believe he would be a valuable addition to the team. We need to strengthen our squad depth as we will be playing in the AFC Cup also this year.”
