Defeat to West Bromwich Albion acts as a big wake up call to Thomas Tuchel and men
Chelsea vs WBA
Chelsea succumbed to a humiliating 5-2 loss at the hands of West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. Mathieus Pereira and Callum Robinson scored respective braces as West Bromwich Albion ran riot in the Chelsea defence. Mbaye Diagne the Albion striker too got his name on the scoresheet.
Thomas Tuchel speaks after the West Bromwich Albion defeat
From the word go, West Bromwich Albion looked a much better side than Chelsea on the day. Sloppy passing and indecisive play enabled Albion players to capitalise on mistakes. Jorginho had an absolute horror show on the pitch and was directly responsible for Thiago Silva’s red card plus the second goal.
Moreover the constant urge of the Chelsea defence to try out risky passes at the back has finally shown it’s results. Over confidence in the defenders and underestimating the attackers finally was put in the rightful place and hopefully now the defensive department can come out of their shell.
The blues will be playing FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final just 3 days later. It’s of utmost importance that Thomas Tuchel is able to revive his side and get them ready for a crucial clash.
“After the red card we were not able to cope with the situation,” he said after the game. “I don’t know why but it was like this. We gave away very easy goals just before half-time. But in the second half, what could go wrong went wrong and we have to accept a big loss today.
“Hopefully it’s a big-wake up call for all of us, me included. We will get the right response because this is sport and this is absolutely necessary. First of all, it’s important we digest it, because it’s a lot to digest. I did not see it coming. Now we have to take our responsibilities – me included – and shake it off and continue tomorrow.”
