How did Dominiq Ponder die?
According to a police report cited by ESPN, Ponder, 23, died in a single-car crash on Sunday. The Colorado State Patrol revealed that the crash occurred at around 3 a.m. Sunday in Boulder County.
Ponder lost control of his 2023 Tesla Model 3, and the car went across the eastbound lane. Shortly after, the car smashed into a guardrail, followed by an electrical line pole, and then rolled down an embankment before catching fire.
The police pronounced Ponder dead at the crash site. Although experts have yet to isolate the main reason behind the accident, a preliminary investigation has hinted that over-speeding may have caused the car to stray off the road.
Colorado offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion posted,
A joy to be around & coach! gonna be tough, but man, this one hurts. Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real. Love you, Dom! God cover his family & our team.

Deion Sanders made notable changes to Colorado’s coaching ranks
College football whistleblowers expected Colorado to take a step back in 2025 after losing Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL. The Buffaloes fell off a cliff. Not only did they fail to replicate their success from the previous season, but Colorado also won just three games all year.

Sanders remained with the team despite the disappointing results, but his coaching staff did not share the same fate. He got rid of most of the offensive staff and, more recently, parted ways with pass rush coordinator Warren Sapp. Sanders recruited Sapp before the 2024 season but preferred to work from the shadows. The Hall of Fame defensive tackle had accumulated 96.5 career sacks and a Super Bowl ring during his playing days.

Another big name to follow Sapp out the door was legendary NFL running back Marshall Faulk. After leaving the Buffaloes, Faulk accepted an offer to be the next head coach at HBCU South University.

Colorado will look to bounce back and challenge for the divisional title once again. However, Sanders must get his players to play at a high level, starting with the quarterback. Coach Prime has a few different options to work with; that said, Lewis is the likely candidate to start on opening day of the 2026 season.
