Only six weeks remain for this NFL regular season to come to a halt. That means, the teams at the bottom of the standings will have to start ramping up their scouting sessions and debate who to pick in next year’s draft. With Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter headlining the class of 2025, Deion Sanders is cautious.

He has time and again mentioned that he will interfere if the wrong team drafts one of his two stars. The Hall of Famer and Colorado Buffaloes head coach has been vocal about his players landing in the right destinations.

That means, a combination of a front office who understands the two, a coaching staff who can extract the best out of them, and a roster of players who can compete is a must. Those are values he himself has sought when he was playing as well as coaching.

His son’s situation is quite easy to grasp as two teams currently head the charts on possible locations for him. But his other superstar, Travis Hunter did mention that he wants to play in the NFL next season, but elder Sanders had this to say.

You never know. You don’t ever know how the NFL acts. If that certain team don’t want to allow him to do what he does, you never know what he may do.

Deion Sanders on Travis Hunter’s draft prospects

In short, Deion Sanders was suggesting that teams should want to allow Travis Hunter to play both ways. That is what the young dual threat athlete wants to do when entering the NFL. His words also indicate that if Hunter does understand he won’t be able to play both ways, he might stay back in college.

Travis Hunter’s draft position next season

Travis Hunter is a rare player who almost plays every snap on offense as well as defense. Deion Sanders was the last player to successfully play both as well as return kicks and punts during his illustrious NFL career. But since his exploits, no other player has successfully played those roles.

Taysom Hill of the New Orleans Saints plays multiple roles, but all of those are on offense. In between, when the defense is on the field, he can catch his breath. In contrast Hunter will be putting his endurance to the test all throughout the game.

For any NFL team drafting at the top, the most immediate concern is longevity. Investing in such a talent would usually mean they want that player to be their franchise’s cornerstone. Playing both sides doubles the risk of injury.

The Colorado Buffaloes head coach did not always play multiple positions. Later in his career he played cornerback and very sporadically played receiver. If Travis Hunter is allowed to play both ways early on, then ease his minutes as he ages, it will be a fine mix. But teams should be willing to take that risk.
