Former cornerback Deion Sanders is a bit of a disciplinarian when it comes to proper attire in the sport. In a recent interview, Sanders expressed his interest in a change in the rules for college football.
While speaking at a Big 12 media day, the Colorado program’s head coach lashed out at the dressing style of the young footballers at the collegiate level. He argued that the biker shorts and the trend of wearing them to the thighs and nothing covering their knees is disrespectful to the game.
Sanders noted that the strict rules, as seen in the pros, should be established in college football. He further added that in order to ensure that the players follow these rules, the rules can be reinforced with fines, so that the players would be a bit more careful with it.
Let’s do something about the uniforms. We’ve got guys in biker shorts. That makes me sick because I’m a football guy — I played this game at a high level and I have so much respect for this game. How can we allow guys out there in biker shorts, no knee pads, no nothing, literally pants up under their thighs, and that’s cool?
He reiterated his statements and imposed the same, while noting that these acts would restore the respect of the game. The old school coaches and fans have not been the best of supporters for the young players living life in the present moment mindset.
Deion Sanders calls for salary cap in college football to address growing disparities
The change in the attire is not the only change Deion Sanders suggested. He addressed how college football is becoming commercialized every minute, and steps need to be taken to protect the players. The sport veteran wished that the college football would start playing according to NFL rules. He added that it would be impactful if they introduced a salary cap system.

According to the former Cowboys and Falcons player, the lack of a salary cap system has allowed the programs with heavy spending power to lure the better players away from the smaller programs. He expressed that despite the player not being a top pick gets snatched away for a money that’s equally given to the best athlete in the position because he’s the best available.
Sanders claimed that this affected the schools with programs that have lesser budgets. He had previously coached the Jackson State Tigers before moving to the Colorado Buffaloes. Although the Buffs were financially better than the Tigers, they all fared well behind the top seeds.
Furthermore, he noted that this has creeped into creating a disparity in the college playoffs. He raised that the teams in the CFP playoffs have a loaded pocket compared to the ones who miss out.
All you have to do is look at the playoffs and what those teams spend, and you understand darn near why they’re in the playoffs. It’s kind of hard to compete with somebody who’s giving $25 to $30 million to a freshman class. It’s crazy. The team that pays the most is going to win.

Deion Sanders says he wishes college football had a salary cap, like the NFL does:

Although many agree with Deion Sanders’ concerns, the timing of his comments has drawn criticism from fans. He first raised similar points three months ago, around the time of the NFL Draft. Fans have labeled the coach a hypocrite, suggesting he only chose to speak out after his sons turned pro.
