Two good things happened to the Houston Texans last season, which no one had expected when they entered with a first-year head coach and a rookie quarterback in the lead. But it turns out those were the jackpot the franchise hit that led to a season with an AFC South title and a playoff victory.
Though the Texans couldn’t succeed beyond the divisional round game, their comeback was undeniable in the debut season of both DeMeco Ryans and CJ Stroud. However, now that the season has ended and the franchise has gathered enough praise, head coach Ryans is ready to hit the reset button for the upcoming 2024 season.
Last weekend, Ryans told NFL Network’s Rhett Lewis at the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame ceremony about how he eagerly anticipated the progress of his team during the training camp and preseason. The Texans’ head coach revealed how he intends to hit the reset button and start working from scratch with his Contender team.
The most exciting thing, what I love about the NFL is it doesn't matter what happened last year– You get to hit reset. That's what I enjoy most. I still enjoy… and it comes back to the Senior Bowl… I still enjoy the growth and development of young players. That's what gets me going.DeMeco Ryans said, which aired in The Insiders
This offseason, the Texans have strengthened their offense with the additions of veterans such as Stefon Diggs, Joe Mixon, and Danielle Hunter.
Coach DeMeco Ryans focuses on improving composure in close games
Heading into the 2024 season, head coach Ryans knows that success isn’t guaranteed year-by-year. Though he appreciates his team for the triumph of 2023, he knows that’s not the ultimate goal. Thus he aims to improvise the team with core additions of the star veteran players whom he is excited about playing next season and recreate the magic as before.
Ryans highlighted that there were many games, where the team figured out at the very end and then flipped the game in their favor. He claimed that at the end of the day, it all comes down to that final moment and how brilliantly a team can execute its strategy.
So I just always remind them, like, 'Hey, we didn't just blow everybody out!' Those games can go either way, and you have to continue to prepare that way coming into this new season.DeMeco Ryans added
The Texans’ HC concluded his stance by adding that he aims to train and strategize the team’s gameplay around performing calmly and smartly in those crucial situations. As if the team wins one game doesn’t guarantee they will have things their way in the next match.
