Denis Shapovalov breaks into the Top 10 in world men’s tennis rankings for the first time on 21st September 2020. He becomes the second Canadian to breakthrough after reaching the semifinals of the Italian Open 2020.

The 21-year-old has been on his outstanding run since the sport resumed after a long pandemic hiatus. He reached the quarters at the US Open this year, where he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in a five-set marathon. At Italian Open, though he lost to Diego Schwartzman in the semis in a dramatic three-set, he climbed up four spots to No.10 after the Argentine got toppled off by the World No. 1, Novak Djokovic at the finals on Monday.

Shapovalov joins the elite 10

The Richmond Hill native joins Zverev, Tsitsipas, Khachanov and Medvedev who too have cracked into the Top 10 and qualified for the Nextgen ATP Finals. He has been in the Top 20 since April 2019, at No. 15. He becomes the first Canadian and the youngest player to enter the elite 10, after Milos Raonic (now No. 19) in August 2017 and Stefanos Tsitsipas in March 2019, respectively.

Further, he becomes the 19th left hander and the 4th left hander of 21st Century to reach the ATP Top 10.

The Canadian has a 2020 record of 13-10. Next up his sleeve is the year’s last major- The French Open which begins from 27th September at Roland Garros in Paris.
