Denis Shapovalov continues to fight against the ATP for his recent controversies during a match in the Citi Open. While the fans were busy with the Paris Olympics, there were some exciting scenes at the Citi Open match between Ben Shelton and Shapovalov.

It was the quarter-final match between the two and a rather exciting one that ended in a default. Both the players were neck and neck with their shots. With each of them finding the accurate marks, they played a couple of intense points to make the match more gripping.

The first set was forced to the tie-break with Ben Shelton winning it. The second set was also equally gripping, as both the players gave it their all for a place in the semis. The second set was six games apiece when Shapovalov lost a point and lost his cool with a fan. He shouted at the person in the stands before Shelton got ready to serve.

The umpire then called off the match by defaulting Shapovalov. Both the players were unhappy with this decision and even Shelton argued with the umpire, but in the end, he got the win as Shapovalov was defaulted from the tournament.

He lost all his points and almost half the prize money he earned over that week. Upon quickly reviewing it, the ATP reinstated the points and prize money to Shapovalov. The Canadian immediately updated the above on his Instagram, informing the fans of the default.

In the lengthy post, Shapovalov narrated the whole incident and kept on fighting for his stand. He was not pleased with the hefty fine of $36,000 issued to him and continues to work towards it. He also thanked the fans and other players for taking his side in this matter and hoped that the ATP would soon do something about the abusive fans.

We all work extremely hard - our tennis careers are our lives and we should not be derailed by unnecessary, subjective ruling. I also hope the ATP can put better rules in place for protecting players from abusive fans.

Denis Shapovalov set to participate in the Canadian Open

Despite the controversies surrounding his default, Denis Shapovalov is set to play the Canadian Open. Although he might not play the singles, the Canadian will play doubles alongside his compatriot Vasek Pospisil – an important tournament for the Canadians on home soil.

He was in good touch in the previous tournament and will hope to build on that in this tournament as well. An incredible chance to play doubles on home soil and Shapovalov would hope to go the distance with his partner.

However, the other Canadians part of the singles draw are Milos Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Even Shapovalov’s doubles partner Pospisil is part of the singles draw. Auger-Aliassime is the Canadian No.1, who is one of the favorites of the tournaments.
