The NASCAR community is facing controversy that they never expected to see over the waiver request from Hendrick Motorsports for Kyle Larson. The 2021 Cup champion missed out on the Coca Cola 600 after a rain delay during his “Double” attempt. He isn’t currently eligible for the championship because of not starting the race at Charlotte.

Many in the racing community expected NASCAR to give Kyle Larson the waiver as soon as they request for it. But to the shock many the sanctioning body hasn’t made a decision on it yet, despite most former driver and team officials urging NASCAR to do it. JGR veteran Denny Hamlin, in his podcast, made a calculated bold statement on the delay.

He claims that someone in the NASCAR hierarchy is offended by the fact that Larson chose to race at Indy 500 knowing he might miss the Coke 600. Hamlin pointed out that the official doesn’t like drivers racing in any other series other than NASCAR and is pissed at the 2021 Cup champion for overlooking Coke 600.

I think they’re pissed. I feel as though they get offended very easily. They’re very sensitive people. They believe that they are the show in the U.S., and if you participate in NASCAR, you shouldn’t participate in anything else. I just don’t think they like playing second fiddle to anyone. There’s someone in headquarters that doesn’t take kindly to playing second fiddle and believes that if you’re going to be over here, then you have to say here. …That’s just my opinion.

Denny Hamlin questions NASCAR’s reasoning for the delay

The keyword that has been used the most to explain over the uncertainty over the waiver has been the fact that Kyle Larson made the choice to miss the Coke 600. Hamlin sees this argument as ridiculous as he pointed out that it is mother nature who ruined the No:5 teams’ effort to run the double.

He had a choice. That’s by the letter of the law, that’s what they’re saying is he had a choice. … It’s ridiculous. I said this weekend in the media center that I thought the five team made good faith efforts to try to get him to Charlotte to run the double. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had its other plans and so, who knows.

The latest reports suggest that NASCAR is seriously considering denying Larson a waiver. This decision will face a huge backlash from the fans and racing community as well. But at the same time giving him the waiver can also be controversial.
