NASCAR has been in the receiving end of huge criticism from racers and fans over decision to severely penalize Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the clash with Kyle Busch at North Wilkesboro. The JTDG Racing driver was given a $75,000 penalty, the biggest fine that was ever given to racer in the history of the sport.
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin has been voicing his displeasure with the decision once it was announced. He has urged the No:47 Chevy driver to appeal the decision, but he also understand that this might not be fruitful as expected. Now the three times Daytona 500 winner has given a bold opinion on the NASCAR appeal body.
He reckons the appeal committee is fixed as they are moderated by a NASCAR official. Hamlin seems to be questioning the obvious bias a body that is created and run by NASCAR might have against the teams and drivers appealing decision. He is of the belief that the system needs to be improved.
I don’t think Ricky got too fair of a shake there but I don’t know if he’s going to appeal or not. I can tell you after the case that we brought, good luck with that fixed system…They bring them in, it’s moderated by a NASCAR official. I mean come on. That system still could be improved.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
Denny Hamlin questions NASCAR’s justification of the penalty
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver on his podcast questioned NASCAR’s reasoning for the penalty. He pointed out that an argument can be made against NASCAR that the claim that Stenhouse had two hours to cool down, as Hamlin believes the two hours made things hard.
I think that NASCAR’s justification is they’re saying it’s because one was right after the race in the heat of the battle, the two just got out the car and the other one sat there for two hours and waited. If anything, if I had to sit there in the infield and watch the race for two hours, I’d probably stew over it and get hotter in it.Denny Hamlin said.
The 23XI Racing co-owners’ argument is right and holds a lot of merit, as had Stenhouse Jr. got the opportunity get out of track he would’ve done it and the fight could’ve easily been avoidable. It would be interesting to see will JTGD Racing will appeal the decision.
