23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin recently sat down with ex-NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace for his YouTube show Kenny Conversations. He discussed many subjects including the charter negotiations and the deteriorated relationships in the sport. They also have some serious discussion about the sponsorship situation in the sport.
Denny Hamlin pointed out that NASCAR and the teams needs to get things right to thrive in terms of sponsorships as they are competing against other leagues which are more organized. The JGR veteran highlighted that the premier stock car racing series is really bad when it comes to situation where they have to have locked arms.
We better get it right, now. What we’re up against are other leagues that have locked arms, and decided that they are going to lock arms with the league and then grow the sport together. NASCAR does that poorly than any other sport by far.Denny Hamlin said via Kenny Conversations.
He pointed out that any sponsor that comes into the sport would understand why NASCAR is considered the most complicated sport to be part of. This is because of the non- homologated situation between NASCAR, teams and tracks.
Ask any sponsor that tries to come in they say it’s the most complicated sport to ever participate in because the tracks own this real estate, NASCAR owns this, the teams own that, like, it’s not homologated, I guess you could say.Denny Hamlin said.
Denny Hamlin explains why Race Team Alliance was formed
Race Team Alliance is the group that represents that all 15 teams in the sport from 2015 and acted as the voice of the teams during the negotiations for a long-time. They were formed to support the team after the sponsorship started to level-off and eventually decline.
How can we come together and start to streamline some of our costs, because the cost just keeps getting higher and higher and higher and higher, and sponsorship is starting to level off. As it went over time, sponsorship started to decline a little bit, ratings declined with it, and the teams were the ones who felt the most pressure by that, right?Denny Hamlin said.
The Toyota driver has given a good description of the gravity of the declining sponsorship situation and why it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. NASCAR hasn’t been a fan of RTA and it would be interesting to see how the dynamic will move forward as the years goes on.
