Daytona 500 is infamous for its chaotic racing and over the years the wrecks have been stacking up, with the Nex-Gen cars being a big factor. One of the most disappointing things for the fans was the fact that race finished yet again with a last lap wreck and not a clean finish many wants to see in the season opener of the sport.
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin didn’t hold back his criticism on his podcast after the Daytona 500. He pointed out that no one in the media is holding anyone accountable for making ridiculous moves during the races and everyone expects the races to with big wrecks. Hamlin hates how no one is criticizing the instigators over the incidents.
Why has it become expected that we’re all just going to take each other out? Because you won’t hear any media holding anyone accountable for making ridiculous moves. When they [drivers] say, ‘I was just going for it,’ yeah, but you made a wrong move. You went for it and took out the field. We don’t hold anyone accountable. We just chalk it up to that’s just what we expect because it happens year after year after year.

The JGR veteran feels everything is getting out of control and asserted that things are trending in the wrong direction. He believes this trend is making luck the key factor behind winning races and championship, making the whole championship illegitimate in the sporting world.
The thing is it’s getting out of control. We keep trending in this direction, like we keep heading more and more into our winner is lucky, our champion is lucky. That is not good for being legitimate in the sports landscape.

Denny Hamlin urges NASCAR to address the controversy
The Toyota Racing Development driver then went onto urge NASCAR to address the Superspeedway issue instead of overlooking them. He wants the changes immediately as the drivers’ physical and mental health are at stake.

We definitely should address it, I’ve said on this show now for years let’s not ignore that we have a superspeedway issue. And for my mental health, for my physical health — I just want us really to address superspeedway racing.

The comments from the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran shows he is really concerned about the direction the sport is on. It would be interesting to see if NASCAR is going to address the situation and make the necessary changes to make racing better.
