The NASCAR Cup garage was at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the second race of the 2025 season and hosted the race as chaotic as expected. The race ended the caution with the front runners wrecking and Christopher Bell winning the race in overtime over rivals Kyle Larson and Carson Hocevar.

One of the biggest controversies from Atlanta was NASCAR calling caution for the last lap, unlike at Daytona where they delayed the calls. Many in the community slammed NASCAR for the inconsistency, as they wanted green flag despite the wreck. JGR veteran Denny Hamlin doesn’t have the same opinion as he believes NASCAR did the right call by prioritizing driver safety.

Listen, there’s only 36 people that want that thing, that caution, thrown. And they’re all sitting in the driver seats. I understand all the millions of people that say, ‘Let that b*tch run green. But you can’t do it, guys. Somebody, seriously, and it could be your favorite driver, will get really, really hurt.

Denny Hamlin said via Actions Detrimental podcast.

Further talking about the point, he asserted that caution represent an Insafe condition and the wreck created one for the past. He is ready to forget the past mistakes from NASCAR and expect this will create a trend of correct calls.

A caution is an unsafe condition. That is the definition. And that is an unsafe condition. Let’s forget the past. They’re 1-0. Let’s start the trend of correct calls this week.

Denny Hamlin insists NASCAR made the right call

The veteran insisted that the call was right and then went on to explain why some doesn’t like it. He pointed out if the fans like entertainment more, then they would have hated the caution. But the true race fans care for driver safety and would have agreed with the call.

It was the right call. Good call? Just depends on who you ask. If you ask the fans who want entertainment, no — it was not a good call in their eyes. But I can assure you there’s not a driver in the field that would want that race to stay green, given the scenarios that were going on. You keep these races green, and someone will end up getting hurt.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has made some strong points supporting NASCAR and many drivers in the garage will align with it. The sanctioning body should take this decision as the benchmark for the remaining races of the 2025 season.
