The 2024 NASCAR Cup season has been marked with the fight between the series owners and teams over the new charter deal. The drama is on another level now, with 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports suing the sports. The major reason behind the issues was the lack of financial sustainability in the sport, with teams losing sponsors often.

23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin in the recent episode of his podcast Actions Detrimental, has explained the situation and names the teams that have staying power in the sport. He pointed out the top-dogs of the sport, Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing are the only team capable of sustaining their sponsorship long-terms.

I think that the only people that have the staying power in our sport for forever and ever is Penske and Hendrick, and it’s why they probably win the bulk of the races. [Joe] Gibbs, you can definitely throw in there as well, but there’s the only ones that can sustain their sponsorship because of the B2B that they leverage to get that sponsorship.

Denny Hamlin said via Actions Detrimental.

The JGR veteran pointed out that no other teams in the sport have the ability sustain themselves longtime, as they are fragile, perform less and are hard to invest. He pointed out that no teams can thrive under such kind of business situation.

No one else really has that ability to do that, so it makes everyone else so fragile, which makes them hard to invest, which makes it hard to perform. It’s just a snowball that happens in this business that makes it extremely difficult.

But what Tony is saying is that if you don’t have a manufacturer deal, which they ended up losing based off of performance and then you start to lose sponsors, it’s going downhill. You’re not going to be able to sustain.

The JGR veteran has made some strong points about the sponsorship situation in the sport and how it is ruining the sport. It will be interesting to see how much the sport will further suffer if the issues with sponsorship and limited support from NASCAR continues.
