I heard a dirty rumor and someone from NASCAR said it that maybe we should expand the championship race to five drivers. Like no, you’re going the wrong direction. Please don’t do that. You’re just watering this down more. Stop making it easier, make it harder. Make it harder — you got to build the prestige of people.

He pointed out that NASCAR shouldn’t be opening up for more spots or opportunities, instead should make it more unique and special. Hamlin highlighted the idea of rest is more and urged NASCAR to not to follow the terrible idea.

Don’t keep opening it up to more places, more spots, more opportunity. No, you gotta make it special. … Let’s not even support that narrative. Let’s just say that’s a terrible idea and you’re going the wrong way. Less, not more.

Denny Hamlin shared his opinion about OEM rule changes

In the same podcast, Hamlin talked about the Open Exemption Provisional that was added to the rule book in 2025. This gives a free starting spot to elite racers from other racing series and he the No:11 Toyota racer hates it. He wants NASCAR to act like the big boys and make the racer earn their spot in the event.

My opinion on this was that it was desperate. I didn’t like it. Just thought that you’re really doing everything you can to try to get a headline. And I still believe it to be true. NASCAR is the highest form of motorsports in the U.S., so why can’t we act like the big boys and say, ‘If you wanna come over here and run with us, show me what you got. Go qualify in the race.’

Denny Hamlin said.

The TRD drivers isn’t the only driver to have come out criticizing the rule change. Many former racers like Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have called out the changes, with the decision to not extend OEP to ex-NASCAR champions making it more frustrating.
