The 2024 NASCAR season has been marked with some crazy incidents that really questioned the drivers code in the sport. At Watkins Glen last Sunday 2017 Cup champion Martin Truex Jr. went on an infuriated rant over the lack of respect during the restarts with the veteran even taking shots at Kyle Larson.
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin shared a similar opinion as his teammate Martin Truex Jr. over the chaos unfolded during restarts. In his podcast, the three times Daytona 500 winner asserted that there is a lack of accountability shown by drivers and admitted that there is a need of a proper self-policing.
There’s just not enough accountability for that. If you think that someone caused a wreck, then you need to self-police this thing and make sure that they know that this was for that incident or whatever it might be.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental podcast.
The 23XI Racing co-owner admitted that that in the green-white-checkereds situation the dramatic incidents only going to continue and there is nothing much there is to do to prevent it from happening again. He also branded his teammate’s rant as quintessential Martin Truex Jr.
But certainly, it seems it’s not going well at the end of these races when it comes to green-white-checkereds. Guys are running over each other for one spot, but there’s not much you can do to change it. Martin just saying, ‘I’m done, I’m out of here,’ is just quintessential Martin Truex.Denny Hamlin added.
Denny Hamlin asserts that there is a lack of respect issue in the spot
The lack of respect in racing has been a big topic of discussion for a long time in the sport and Denny Hamlin has yet again made the same argument. He believes this is getting worse every year as incidents gets un-policed.
It’s different now than what it used to be. There’s certainly not a whole lot of respect amongst the drivers, especially in these green-white-checkered situations. We see it over and over, year after year and it just keeps getting a little worse each year. There’s just no regard anymore.Denny Hamlin said.
The points made by the veteran is on the mark and NASCAR has to do something to put some sense back to them. It will be interesting to see how NASCAR will approach the growing criticism from the veterans over lack of respect.
