One of the biggest criticism regrading current NASCAR Cup Series is the qualifying system where the drivers are split into tow groups based on a metric system. Often the drivers that runs as part of Group A has the advantage and end up on pole. The fans are most often furious with the system because it costs their favourite driver a good starting position in races.

Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin talked about the complaints raised by fans in the latest episode of his podcast and asserted that they should stop complaining as it is the fairest system there is. He called out the supporters’ double standard as they had remained silent when their favorite driver was on the good side of the session.

This is the most fair way to do it. Stop complaining. By the way, whoever your driver got screwed this week because of the A and the B, they reaped the benefits of that last week. You weren’t complaining — you didn’t say s— then.

The 23XI Racing co-owner went onto assert that the system works out and many would rather do it the way it is over the old system. Hamlin admitted that drivers like the new system because most often everyone is running on same conditions.

What I’m saying is, it works out. All the drivers would rather, I’m telling you, they would rather do it this way, to only race the cars in their group, because the conditions are the same.

Denny Hamlin admitted that the current system looks wonky on TV

By predicting what is coming for next Cup race, which would be hosted at Richmond Raceway, Denny Hamlin re-iterated that the current qualifying system is the fairest. But he did later admit that it does look wonky on the TV.

If we go to Richmond and you did not have the A on the outside, the B on the inside, it’s going to be all A cars in the top five, and all the B are going to be six through ten, because it’s just — it’s such an advantage to have your tires cooler, and I’m telling you, the way they’re doing it now is the most fair way to do it. It just looks wonky on TV.
Denny Hamlin said.

The discussions over the qualifying system won’t end anytime soon and most probably NASCAR would continue with the current system as long as they face backlash from the drivers. It would be interesting to see what the future holds for the session.
