The NASCAR Cup garage had a good race in it’s return to the Iowa Speedway last Sunday, but most of the drivers are not happy with the race product Next-Gen produced. One of the major reasons behind this uncomfortable feeling among the racer, according to veteran Denny Hamlin, is the issue with not being able to pass in the traffic.
If the fast cars can’t pass the leading drivers on the track due to the dirty air issue, the possibility having great races are ruined with as the race leader has an unfair advantage. This needs to be fixed with changes to the aero design, using softer tires and making adjustment to the Next-Gen that it remains on the ground in dirty air.
In the latest episode of the Actions Detrimental podcast, Denny Hamlin asserted that NASCAR needs to fix the issue soon as there will be more poor races as long as the car remains the same. He revealed how the front of the car always lifting up while following another car, reduces grip and ruins the opportunities to make overtakes.
You want to make it better, for sure. Until we get the front of these racecars on the ground instead of a foot off the ground we’re going to continue to have the same problems, and that is when we get behind someone we’re just going to plow.
Denny Hamlin said on the Actions Detrimental Podcast.
The three times Daytona 500 winner then declared that the attitude of the seventh-generation cars is wrong and urged NASCAR fix it, in order to have better racing in the traffic. He wants a design change that will reduce the underbody and have more overbody, and even admitted that the current situation of the cars drives him crazy.
The attitude of the cars are wrong. It’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong, please fix it, it’s wrong, it’s wrong. Fix the attitude of the car, it’ll make them better in traffic. More overbody, less underbody. If you want the same amount of downforce put it on the overbody, take it off the underbody. God dangit, it drives me crazy.

Denny Hamlin explains how the tire issue makes race leader Superman
Earlier talking about the same topic, Denny Hamlin explained the issues with the car and how it is hard to even pass the cars outside the top-30, when the they are in traffic. This gives the race leader the opportunity to easily defend his position upfront and extend his lead significantly.

It’s the yo-yo effect you see at Martinsville. No one can pass. You can’t pass the 30th-place car. That is the problem we’re talking about and that is what we have to fix. It’s that the leader looks like superman because he can run half throttle and just hold everyone off. Chase Briscoe at Pocono.

The fact that short track, which has been the root of NASCAR from day one of the sport, is getting affected the most is disappointing for Hamlin and everyone surrounding the sport. Hence he wants NASCAR to step up and makes changes starting with forcing goodyear to come up with softer tires.
If you can do it at a short track, that should be like the eye-opener. OK, we’ve really got to fix this. Goodyear’s really done a good job all year long of trying to implement softer and softer tires. It’s just this one, I don’t know how they got where they got on this tire…
Denny Hamlin asserted.
The components being used at the moment to make tires offers very limited fall off and as long as they don’t become much softer, the new tier advantage won’t be significant enough to make races entertaining. It would be interesting to see how NASCAR is going to respond to the drama in the coming days.
