The San Francisco 49ers have finally given their verdict on linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for leaving his struggling team in the middle of a game. But before he officially goes, his teammate (or rather former teammate) Deommodore Lenoir has a blunt message for him, expressing his disdain.

The controversy erupted during a recent matchup where the star linebacker was called upon to step in as a backup after linebacker Dre Greenlaw got injured. Despite the urgent need for his team, he decided to walk away and refused to return in the critical game, which anyway ended in a loss.

After the 49ers’ players labeled this unprofessional behavior by Campbell as “selfish,” Lenoir– who initially had welcomed Campbell’s addition to the team, expressed his disappointment and opted to go unfiltered with his words while addressing the media on Monday.

For that to happen and him to do that, I just lost all respect. I’m a person that’s going 110% every play. If I am hurt and the guy behind me is not backing me up and can’t come in or don’t want to go in, I just feel like he’s a cancer to the team.

Not only did the linebacker lose all the respect of his teammates, but head coach Kyle Shanahan made it pretty clear that such behavior is absolutely unacceptable by any player. He severed all ties with the team when he exited the field in the middle of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

49ers suspend De’Vondre Campbell for three games

When the 49ers decided to go for suspension rather than outright release, they made it clear that the franchise would not tolerate such behavior without consequences. General Manager John Lynch announced on Monday that the Niners are imposing a three-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

We have suspended De’Vondre Campbell Sr. for three games due to conduct detrimental to the team. We will have no further comment on the matter.

John Lynch said in his statement

Although Campbell would remain part of the team until the end of the season, that’s only officially as the franchise has already removed his nameplate and emptied his locker from the 49ers locker room. This is widely considered to be an end to Campbell’s career in the NFL, as the teams have next to zero tolerance for unpredictability and his decision to abandon his team certainly falls in the category.
