Depleted Real Madrid come out with a 2-0 victory against Getafe
Real Madrid won 2-0 against Getafe at the Alfredo De Stefano Stadium in a midweek La Liga fixture. 2 second half goals from Benzema and Ferland Mendy gave the Los Blancos a much needed win.
Real Madrid had only 12 fit first team members available for this match. Zidane named 3 academy graduates in Marvin Park, Chust and Arribas to make up the match-day squad. All 3 Castilla players had a run out in this fixture in the absence of the bigger names.
Zidane tried a new formation with several players injured
Real Madrid played with a 3-4-3 formation, with Marvin and Marcelo as right and left wing-back respectively, and it worked well. The lack of cohesion in this new formation was evident in the first half where Madrid created very few chances.
However, Zidane’s mid-game talk proved to have paid dividends as Madrid came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half. Benzema headed in the first goal right on the hour mark from a Vinicius cross. Real doubled their advantage when Mendy playing as the 3rd centre-back continued his run into the box and deflected in Marcelo’s cross from the left.
Zidane praised his players for adapting to the new 3-4-3 formation used.
“We didn’t prepare it very much, but in the end we spent some time before the game talking and organising it, and the players understood it very well,” Zidane explained.
“And it’s good, when it’s a formation you’re not used to, and it turned out to be a good game.”
Real Madrid climbed into 2nd spot 3 points clear of Barcelona with the victory against Getafe. However, they trail league leaders Atletico Madrid by 5 points.
