Derrick Henry’s first season at the Baltimore Ravens went under the radar because Eagles’ Saquon Barkley hogged the limelight. He narrowly missed out on his second 2000-yard campaign.
Henry ended the 2024 campaign with 325 carries for 1921 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns (most in the league). During a segment of the Dan Patrick Show, host Dan Patrick proposed a goal for the 31-year-old.
Patrick claimed he would arrange a role for Henry in an Adam Sandler movie if he crossed 2000 yards. Henry, being a massive Sandler fan, quickly agreed and replied, “Alright, cool, say no more.”
Patrick assured Henry that he would feature in an Adam Sandler movie if he kept his end of the bargain.
I’ll take care of my end of it. I mean, mine’s easy. Yours is hard.
Dan Patrick said
Nine running backs, including Henry, achieved the coveted 2000 yards in an NFL season. Henry rushed for 2027 yards from 378 carries and scored 17 rushing touchdowns while playing for the Tennessee Titans in 2020. The Titans reached the wild-card round but lost against the Ravens. The AFC North side limited Henry to only 40 yards from 18 carries (2.2 yards per carry).

Patrick made a deal: Rush for 2,000 yards again this season, and he’ll get Sandler to put him in a movie.

Henry left the Titans in 2024 and signed with the Ravens. They reached the divisional game but lost 27-25 against the Buffalo Bills. Henry had 16 carries for 84 yards.
On May 14, 2025, Derrick Henry signed a two-year contract extension with the Ravens. According to Spotrac, the contract is worth $30 million, of which $25 million is guaranteed.
PFF named Derrick Henry the best running back of the 2024 NFL season
Barkley set a personal milestone by rushing 2283 scrimmage yards, leading to his Offensive Player of the Year triumph and the honor of becoming the cover athlete of Madden 26. However, Pro Football Focus graded Henry (94.2) as the best running back in 2024.

PFF wrote in their best running back article,
The best runner from the 2024 season was not just prolific in regards to this past season; he was historically great. Henry’s 93.5 rushing grade this season was the highest ever recorded in the PFF era (since 2006). Despite some expecting a dropoff at age 30, Henry’s motor is unceasing. The bruising back led all qualifying backs in yards per carry (6.0), first down rushes (105), and missed tackles forced on carries (88)—all of which land in the top eight in PFF history.
Barkley didn’t even crack the top 10. The Penn State graduate was the 11th-best running back on the list, one place above Green Bay Packers‘ second-stringer Emmanuel Wilson.
The best running backs of 2024 list (PFF)
- 1. Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens
- 2. Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons
- 3. Josh Jacobs of the Green Bay Packers
- 4. Bucky Irving of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 5. James Conner of the Arizona Cardinals
- 6. Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions
- 7. Kenneth Walker III of the Seattle Seahawks
- 8. Tyler Allgeier of the Atlanta Falcons
- 9. James Cook of the Buffalo Bills
- 10. David Montgomery of the Detroit Lions
Henry’s second year in Baltimore could be even better than his first. He has an incentive to record another 2000-yard season and possibly lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl appearance.
