A week after the Cleveland Browns’ owners more or less hinted Deshaun Watson’s trade was a failure, the former first-rounder posted a video on social media with his reply. He is gearing up for his redemption arc.

The Browns gave a fortune to trade Watson away from the Houston Texans in 2022. Injuries and s**ual assault allegation lawsuits limited his time on the field. He only appeared in a total of 19 games during that time.

During the NFL owner’s meeting in Miami last week, Jimmy and Dee Haslam accepted that Deshaun Watson’s trade was a mistake. Watson posted a video in reply to answer his critics.

Greatness comes when your back is against the wall. It’s kind of better because you really got to lock in. [I] don’t have anything pretty much to lose, and I feel like that’s where I’m at right now. Everyone is doubting me.

Deshaun Watson said in the video

Watson still has two years left on his $230 million guaranteed contract. His biggest challenge would be convincing his coaches to let him start at quarterback, as they are aggressively chasing a replacement even after signing Super Bowl winner Kenny Pickett.

It’s bound to be an uphill task, but Watson claimed the hard work he put in these last few months has given his confidence back.

Everyone don’t believe in me. Everyone don’t think I can get back to where I was. But I know, and I believe the work that I put in, that I believe in myself. The peace that I’ve been channeling the last couple of months. I know, I’m gonna be way better than before.

Are the Browns gearing up for Deshaun Watson’s return?

Initially, most mock drafts projected the Browns drafting either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. The narrative, however, has shifted lately.

Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski are reportedly contemplating between Penn State’s pass rusher and Colorado’s Travis Hunter. According to Yahoo Sports and BetMGM, Hunter is a -135 odds-on favorite to be drafted by the Browns as the second overall pick on April 24. Hunter is scheduled to visit the Browns facility after taking a detour to Boston first.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also confirmed that the wind in Cleveland has slowly shifted from Carter to Hunter.

I believe Travis Hunter is the more likely pick at [No.] 2 today.

Hunter wants to play both ways, but Schefter predicted that the Browns might use him more as a wide receiver than as a cornerback.

I think he could play two ways for them, but I think they may think of him more as a receiver than a cornerback.

Adam Schefter added

Drafting Hunter instead of a quarterback or a pass rusher only indicates that Berry has a backup plan for the quarterback spot. Even though Pickett wants to be the starter, the chances of that happening are very slim.

This leaves two options open for the Browns. First, they can trade for or sign a veteran quarterback. Kirk Cousins is one name that has constantly been linked with them—he signed a $180 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons last year. Apart from Cousins, the Browns can bring back Joe Flacco for another year, and he would be cheaper than Cousins.

The second option would be for the Browns to restore Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback. They are already paying his bills; they might as well give him another shot.
