Since joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022, Deshaun Watson has been plagued with controversies. Whether it was regarding his lucrative contract or 11-game suspension, he hasn’t been able to sigh in relief and focus solely on his game.
But heading into the 2024 season, the quarterback has decided not to get affected by the chaos and noise outside the football field. After two disappointing years where he couldn’t be present for most of the season, Watson is determined to bring some results in the upcoming season and put all his focus on the game.
Watson added that he has decided to block all outside noises and focus on bringing out his best version on the football field as well as his personal life.
Honestly it’s really just blocking out all the bulls**t outside. Stuff coming in two years, different environment, different team, different all that. So, you come in and your character is being mentioned this way and it kind of flip on you and you're trying to get people to like you or improve. But now it's like, at the end of the day, it's two years in and if you don't like me or you have your own opinion, it is what it is.Deshaun Watson said during the press conference on Friday
The Browns quarterback was suspended in 2022 after around two dozen women accused him of sex*al assault and inappropriate conduct. Although the Texas grand jury decided not to pursue charges, he sustained suspension from the NFL for misconduct.
Deshaun Watson reflects on challenging period amid sex*al assault allegations
During the press conference, Watson also addressed the sex*al assault allegations against him indirectly and referred to it as a challenging period of his life. As much as he tried to block the outside noise, he faced a tough time since people formed opinions about him based on what the media showed.
He exclaimed that though no one actually knew his history or the person he was, his character was being judged publicly. Being a people-pleaser, Watson said his media trial did affect him but he later realized that only he and his loved ones knew his character and so he “got to just be like, ‘Forget it.’ It is what it is.”
