At some point, the Cleveland Browns must realize the investment in Deshaun Watson backfired big time. Watson’s rustiness was on full display against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

The 28-year-old, who missed a chunk of the 2022 and 2023 season due to injury and suspension, returned as the Browns’ starting quarterback. It did little to ease the nerves of the Cleveland faithful.

With a blink of an eye, they were down 3-27 in the third quarter, which Watson closed by throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Jeudy. If the Browns fans believed it was the start of a remarkable comeback, then they had another thing coming.

After the Cowboys failed to add any points, the Browns had possession once more. Deshaun Watson, on the other hand, threw one of the worst, if not the worst, completions of his NFL career.

The clock showed the match only had about 22 minutes left until the final whistle. On 1st & 10 in the 3rd quarter, Watson was in acres of space to find a Browns receiver. He targeted Amari Cooper, who was tailed by Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.

The ball sailed over both of their heads and landed in the lap of CeeDee Lamb, whose expression spoke myriads of what he thought about the pass. It was more or less the same on the internet as Browns fans have had enough and the casuals who just can’t seem to have enough.

Before the start of the season, former NFL player and now ESPN contributor Damien Woody put forward a good observation about Watson.

We haven’t seen high-level football from Deshaun Watson since 2020. He is the biggest unknown player that we might have in the National Football League right now.
Damien Woody said

The Browns parted with first-round draft picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as the Browns’ third-round pick in 2023 and fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024, and agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year $230 million to sign Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans in 2022. Since then, he has spent more of his time outside the football field than on it.

The Pro Bowler only played a combined 12 games before the season opener against the Cowboys, in which he threw three interceptions. He finished the Sunday game 24/45 for 169 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions as the Browns lost 17-33.
