Desmond Ridder, who has a “chip on his shoulder”, gets very emotional while recounting the events after getting Raiders call

The Falcons drafted Desmond Ridder hoping he would carry forward Matt Ryan’s legacy into the future. But he was cut after just appearing in 19 games. Arizona came calling, and Ridder switched allegiance to the Cardinals to back up Kyler Murray.

The Cardinals quickly realized Clayton Tune was a better option, and Ridder fell to third choice. So, when the Raiders came calling for an upgrade on his current status, the 25-year-old did not waste any time and answered the call.

However, the harsh realities of being an NFL quarterback remain embedded in his mind. Ridder became emotional while speaking with reporters for the Raiders locker room.

I was just cut three months ago. That should be enough opportunity, enough motivation to keep me going any time.

Every time a player gets cut from a team, it affects their livelihoods as well as leaving deep anxiety for their families.

You know, back home I got the call [from Antonio Pierce] and everything. And my daughter was like ‘Daddy, where are you going?’ I’m like, ‘I gotta go to Vegas.’ But I know I’d do everything for them. I’d do everything for my family.

Ridder added.

Raiders brought Ridder in as an emergency replacement for Aidan O’Connell, who broke his thumb in his throwing hand and will miss the next few weeks of football.

This is just another opportunity to go out and prove to them, prove to myself, prove to everyone I can be out here and go do this.

Antonio Pierce is excited to work with Desmond Ridder

The Raiders haven’t had the best start to the season as they sit with a 2-5 record following three consecutive defeats. On top of that, O’Connell’s injury made their situation even dire, which forced head coach Antonio Pierce’s hands to look for a new quarterback, leading him to sign Ridder from the Cardinals practice squad.

Ridder arrived at the Vegas facility yesterday and trained with the team on Wednesday. When reporters asked Pierce for his first impression of Desmond Ridder, Pierce was left impressed.

Bright-eyed kid. Very smart. Very sharp.

Ridder will be available for the Raiders’ week eight fixture against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before that, his current goal will be to bag the backup job by competing with Carter Bradly. When asked whether he has a chip on his shoulder, Ridder agreed.

Yeah, for sure. It’s not even to the rest of the league; it’s to myself. I know what I can do; I know what I can be.

Ridder posted a win record of 8-9 at Atlanta. In those games, the former Bearcat put up 3,544 yards, 14 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 84.1.
