The highly anticipated Noche UFC event and Canelo Alvarez’s fight card clashed last weekend. The general audience seemingly loved both events. However, because of that clash, there were several speculations about one of the events to falter. However, it didn’t happen, as the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight card generated a massive gate and incredible PPV.

UFC CEO Dana White was quite confident about his dream UFC event. Meanwhile, PBC and TGB did not voice anything about the gate or expected PPV sales ahead of the fight. However, per several reports, the gate for Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga is around $17 million against everyone’s expectations. This eventually indicates the brand value Canelo Alvarez holds in his domain.

As for UFC, Dana White also did excellent business as their gate is estimated at around $22 million. Although several netizens critiqued the performances at Noche UFC, the live audience seemingly felt the visuals were worth it. As for Canelo, the Mexican boxing star yet again shined in an Independence Day bout. He comfortably thrashed Berlanga to hand him his first professional career loss.

Interestingly, it was not only the ticket sales that stole the show; the PPV buys were great, as well. As reported by Sports Business Journal, the PPV sales generated from the Canelo Alvarez fight card were close to $650K. Following such a successful event, the PBC and TBG executives heaped praises on Canelo’s stardom. Per the executives, that popularity factor was necessary to compete against the grand UFC event.

Canelo Alvarez’s history of clashing against UFC events

Canelo Alvarez and the UFC have a history of scheduling events on the same dates. Unlike previous occurrences, the clash received significant attention from the general public this time. Interestingly, Canelo’s events outsold the UFC’s in almost all previous clashes.

Most recently, the UFC 288 fight card featuring Henry Cejudo and Aljamain Sterling went up against the Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder fight card. Despite expectations for Cejudo’s return to UFC to make the event stand out, it did not meet those expectations.

Even Canelo’s fight against Caleb Plant thrashed one of the intriguing UFC fight cards featuring Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington in terms of live gate. All these are a clear example of the Mexican boxing icon’s stardom and popularity. Over the years, Alvarez became a standout boxer because of his determination to fight formidable opponents.

Throughout his long career, he faced off against top boxers such as Floyd Mayweather and Gennady Golovkin. His first bout against GGG set a record with an impressive $27 million gate. Notably, this fight currently ranks among the top 5 highest-grossing gates in boxing history, with the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight holding the top spot.
