Despite Mark Cuban’s help, ex-Mav Delonte West arrested after collapse in police chase
Mark Cuban had helped Delonte West go into rehab.
Despite getting help from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Delonte West collapsed after running away from cops and was arrested
Delonte West played in the NBA for 8 years. He also made close to $16 million in salary. However, since leaving the league, the point guard has been bereft of financial and other substance abuse-related problems. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban even helped him at one point. But police arrested the now 40-year-old.
TMZ Sports reporter Michael J Babcock reported that the former point guard was arrested on Thursday morning. This is after he ran away after police went to serve a warrant. The officers did catch up with him, but he was lying unresponsive. The officers administered Narcan, but it did not revive the former Mavericks star. Then after receiving a second dose of Narcan at a local hospital, he became responsive and was then transferred to police custody.
He was charged with misdemeanor and for violating conditions of release and resisting arrest. This is a follow-up on his 2022 arrest for misdemeanor and public intoxication charges. The mugshot of West shows a worrying sign considering he could not even keep his eyes open.
West has struggled to stay out of trouble since retiring from the league. In 2020 he was seen panhandling and was picked up by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Cuban then worked with him and put him in rehab. He did improve and tried out for Big 3 league. But it seems, he has fallen on tough times.
Delonte West has had a tumultuous life
Other than these arrests, Delonte West was known to be in financial trouble even while playing in the NBA. During the 2011 lockout, he applied for a job at Home Depot and worked at a furniture store. That does not sound right when a player was earning more than $1 million each year. In fact, the year before the lockout he earned more than $4 million.
It is reported that West bought houses for his parents and helped relatives financially. But it still does not make sense how a player earning millions had to beg at one point in time. Just like many others, it seems the former Dallas Mavericks star was not good with handling his finances.
These issues have also led to substance abuse and several running-ins with the law. Now he will be released if he posts a $2000 bond. Hopefully, he can sort his life out and turn things around.
