Despite sinking Steph Curry-esque threes, Luka Doncic takes blame for Mavericks loss
NBA and Mavs star Luka Doncic made his intentions clear after suffering harsh defeat against the Rockets on home court.
Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic
After defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks went home to take on the Houston Rockets, their in-state foe. However, their homecoming did not start positively, as they lost to the Rockets in a thrilling encounter. The Mavs’ star player, Luka Doncic, had a slow start to this game, which caused the Rockets to take advantage away from home.
However, Doncic has been playing brilliantly for the Mavs this season. His shooting has also improved, with Doncic making Stephen Curry-esque threes in back-to-back games. In his matchup against the Rockets, Doncic scored wonderful threes, but that wasn’t enough to get them the win. In addition, he also took the blame for his side’s loss.
Furthermore, Kyrie Irving finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, making him the night’s best Maverick. Irving was the one who kept the offense going when the team needed it most, even though Luka Doncic scored 29 points, more than Irving did.

On the other hand, leading the Houston Rockets with 23 points, Jalen Green pulled down 12 rebounds. Alperen Sengun (17 points, 12 rebounds, 6 offensive rebounds), Dillon Brooks (17 points), Tari Eason (15 points), Jabari Smith Jr. (14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 offensive rebounds), and Amen Thompson (10 points) were the other five players that scored in double digits.
Klay Thompson once called Luka Doncic the ‘best player in the world’
Klay Thompson, a four-time champion and former Golden State Warriors icon, was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Free Agency. He became one of the league’s most significant off-season additions, joining the outstanding backcourt tandem of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
Thomspon was quite outspoken about both stars and full of compliments for his new teammates, saying he is excited to play with them in the 2024–25 NBA season. The four-time champion also heaped huge praise on Doncic in particular.
“Luka [Doncic] is one of the best players in the world when the ball is in his hands… He’s gonna generate a ton of great looks for me. It was a nightmare trying to guard him and Kyrie [Irving].”

Irving and Doncic felt the same way about their new partner. Additionally, since Thompson joined the team, Doncic has openly stated that the Mavs aim for the NBA championship. However, it won’t be easy as the Mavs have 3 out of 5 wins in the 2024-25 NBA season. This showcases the immense competition they have to face this season if they were to win the 2024-25 NBA title.
