Details behind Vince McMahon winning the 1999 Royal Rumble

WWE CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon, won the Royal Rumble in 1999. Former WWE writer, Vince Russo has now explained the logic behind McMahon emerging victorious in the event.
During the 1999 period, Vince McMahon was a top Heel in the company. McMahon was involved in a long-term rivalry with Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake was the top babyface of the company.
The reason for McMahon emerging victorious was that it allowed the writers to create interesting TV scenarios before and after the event. Russo recently appeared on SK Wrestling’s Off the SKript.
“You need to create these scenarios to keep it going. That’s why when you have the idea of, ‘Okay, Vince is gonna win the Royal Rumble,’ then part of that becomes the positioning. I think the cliffhanger the week before had something to do with the [people who entered at] one and two, and now it opens it up.”
McMahon did not headline Wrestlemania XV

A win at Royal Rumble, usually qualifies for a Championship match at Wrestlemania. But this was not the case with Vince McMahon. He did earn a Wrestlemania spot, but he lost the opportunity in a match.
McMahon lost the Wrestlemania spot at St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, in a Steel cage match to Seve Austin. Austin went on to win the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania XV. He defeated The Rock to win the title.
