The Philadelphia 76ers sent tremors across the NBA after acquiring nine-time All-Star Paul George through free agency in the offseason. But the 76ers’ Monday night’s preseason matchup against the Atlanta Hawks caused concern for the team’ and its fans as George went down with a scary injury to his knee.
After heading to the locker room in the second quarter, George was ruled out for the rest of the game with a hyperextension of his left knee. As fans waited with bated breath for an update, more details emerged about the severity of George’s injury.

This didn't look comfortable for Paul George. Hopefully him sitting the second half is unrelated. https://t.co/Ode0cpYQNK pic.twitter.com/fakgqJUstA
Following the game, 76ers beat reporter Gina Mizell spoke with Paul George, who revealed that he’s “not too concerned” about the prognosis of the injury.
Chatted with Paul George in the postgame locker room. He had a sleeve on the knee but was walking and said he is “not too concerned” about the prognosis. Will get treatment on it tonight and proceed from there. More coming later.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse also spoke on the injury following the match.
Nurse seemed optimistic about the timeline for George’s return. However, the injury had certainly shaken up the veteran coach’s plans to integrate the star forward into the team.
Certainly trying to work him into things… So this doesn’t give him a chance to do that
Nick Nurse told reporters
Nick Nurse on the timing of Paul George’s injury: “Certainly trying to work him into things, and he wants to work into things too. So this doesn’t give him a chance to do that. Hopefully it’ll be OK so he’s back with us right away.”

While Nurse obviously remains concerned about the injury, his words seem to indicate that George still can make a comeback in time for the Sixers’ season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on October 23.
Paul George adds to 76ers injury concerns
The news of Paul George’s injury comes as another shock to Philadelphia 76ers fans, just hours after Joel Embiid gave grim updates about his own injury history. George also has had a slew of troubles with knee injuries.
During his five-year tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers, the star forward dealt with a number of nagging injuries. The most notable one, however, remains the gruesome knee injury that George suffered during the 2014 Team USA camp.
The new season is off to a rocky start for the Sixers. The team has high expectations following the big offseason acquisitions. George had already stated his excitement at the chance to finally play with an elite big man and point guard at the same time.
However, these injury concerns have held the star trio of Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid from seeing the court together during the preseason. Following George’s latest injury, it seems like it might be a while before we finally see the stars descend onto the hardwood together in the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia.
