Athletes across all major American sporting leagues earn a pretty penny. That is what draws some of the world’s best players to come stateside and earn contracts. For NBA players, such as Devin Booker, the league’s global footprint has helped them garner fans from all corners of the world.
The 1992 Dream Team was a testament to basketball’s massive fan following. Documentaries revealed how hordes of fans lined up to catch a glimpse of the greatest athletes in the world. The recent Paris Olympics was another example.
Booker saw his notable superstar teammates, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant get swarmed for autographs. Team USA games were sold out, as fans from across the world wanted to watch the greatest basketball stars compete.
That global fan following has helped the NBA garner a massive $76 Billion media-rights deal. Even if ratings were down over the past couple of years, broadcasters knew the league’s worth. That has started to trickle down towards the players.
Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker has agreed to a two-year, $145 million maximum contract extension with the franchise through the 2029-30 season, the highest annual extension salary in NBA history, CAA’s Jessica Holtz and Melvin Booker told ESPN.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke this news, confirming that Devin Booker, will possess the highest annual salary of any major sports league in America. His $72.5 million per year will trump the likes of MLB’s Shohei Ohtani, NFL’s Dak Prescott, and MLS’ Lionel Messi.
Extension shows Suns’ trust in Devin Booker
The Phoenix Suns’ major experiment to bring in superstars in Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal has failed. The former has switched teams after a record-breaking 7-team trade, and will be competing against the Suns next season.
The latter is in the process of a buyout. That leaves Devin Booker as the original member of the Big 3, still to remain on the squad. There were trade rumors involving him after the Suns’ season ended in disappointing fashion.
However, the team know his worth. Over the past year, the 28-year-old has given enough proof that he has matured to become a leading superstar. In the past, his decision-making was a major point of concern.
He would go on massive scoring runs, however, that would not benefit the team. During his stint with Team USA, he embraced his do-it-all non-focal point role. That earned him praise from all quarters.
The Suns probably see that as a coming of age for their franchise cornerstone. This extension ties him down until the 2029-30 season, which gives the team enough time to bring some semblance of competitive basketball, while still fixing their mistakes of the past few years.
Bradley Beal could soon leave Devin Booker behind as lone superstar
The Phoenix Suns’ Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, were doomed from the start. Health issues aside, their ability to complement each other was always suspect. Franchise fans believe the ownership should not have pushed to trade for Beal.

However, owner Mat Ishbia wanted to win at all costs, but did not realize his decision would end up costing the team their future. Now, his top executives are working round the clock to secure a buyout with Beal.
Latest updates suggest a deal is imminent, and Beal would become a free agent once done. Rumors propose he will likely sign with the Los Angeles Clippers after they created space for him to join them.
There is significant momentum building towards Bradley Beal signing with the Clippers, once his buyout with the Suns becomes official soon.

Wherever he goes, the Phoenix Suns will be off the hook, and they can start a new era with Booker, Jalen Green, and the new centers they have brought in. Of course, there is Dillon Brooks to help defensively and be their vocal leader.
