Devin Haney stands out as one of the popular names in the boxing world. Matchroom CEO Eddie Hearn has recently revealed the plans for Haney’s next fight. The former two-division world champion is returning to fight at 140 again. The fight that Hearn planned for Haney is against the unbeaten Liam Paro on December 7th in Australia.
Liam Paro claimed the super-lightweight IBF belt in June in Puerto Rico, where he upset Subriel Matias by unanimous decision. According to the Matchroom promoter, the 28-year-old southpaw is interested in squaring off against Haney next. Interestingly, this potential fight will be Paro’s first title defense at his home.
This is a fight that Liam would also like to have. Devin has a good reputation in Australia after those two fights with Kambosos. So, this could be an option... The plan for Liam Paro is a fight on December 7 in Australia. That’s the goal. We are negotiating with different state governments about holding Liam Paro's fight. Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide.Eddie Hearn told BoxingScene
Hearn also reveals another opponent for Paro, if not Haney. His fellow Australian boxer George Kambosos Jr., who has been lightweight for a long time now, can also fight the 28-year-old. Meanwhile, Devin Haney currently fights super lightweight, where he was phenomenal on his debut. In his debut, Haney outclassed Regis Prograis to become the WBC champion of the division.
Following that, Devin Haney has had a rollercoaster 2024 thus far. Haney took on one of boxing’s most famous names, Ryan Garcia, but the clash did not go to plan. Even though Garcia won that fight, weeks later, it was declared a no-contest. Nevertheless, as everyone witnessed, Haney looked clueless during the fight. Recently, the Matchroom boss mentioned the mistakes that the 28-year-old’s camp made.

Ryan Garcia, despite failing to make weight, delivered a dominating performance in the fight, demonstrating his skill and power. He managed to knock down Haney three times before claiming victory. However, following the bout, it was revealed that ‘KingRy’ had tested positive in a drug test. The controversial drug test eventually led to Garcia’s troubled phase of life following the fight.
Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn took time to break down everything that went wrong in that fight during an interview with Andre Ward on ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT. The Matchroom boss went right off the bat and acknowledged that the fight preparation was dull from Haney’s camp.
You know, there were mistakes in the fight. There were mistakes in the weigh-in. There were mistakes in the preparation. I respect that and I really like the guy, you know. But sometimes I think, you know this too, you can kind of lose your direction a little bit in terms of you think now that you're so big you know all the right decisions to make.Eddie Hearn via ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT
Interestingly, Garcia did want to have a rematch with Devin Haney following the no-contest decision. However, Haney clearly wanted to avoid that. As such, he openly rejected KingRy’s offer to fight again fair and square. Now, it remains to be seen whether there will be a possibility of this fight happening again. But before that, Haney’s fight announcement against Paro has caused quite a stir in the community.
