The Philadelphia Eagles had a fantastic off season. They have not only tried to fix the mistakes of the past season, but also get better across all position groups. One of the most important pickups was former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White. But Bucs fans and those in the NFL wondered why he chose to uproot his family to join the Eagles. Now White has come out with his reasons.

The former All-Pro was a guest on the latest episode of the podcast, The Pivot. Wile speaking with host and former linebacker Channing Crowder, White detailed what drew him to come to Philly.

Rather taking such and such with another team, that don't have the pieces around to even allow me to become even better. You come here, you got Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat, it's pieces here. If I come in here and come a dominant middle linebacker, they never had that. It's still around a great team.

With that statement, he admitted that despite having more lucrative options elsewhere, he chose to join the Philadelphia Eagles. A pay cut is fine for him if he is surrounded by an elite group of teammates.

Devin White knows what it means to be around great players. They are the ones he will need if he wants to win another Super Bowl. He knows he can get better pay elsewhere, but that would likely mean being part of a rebuild, making playoff success highly unlikely.

Taking a pay cut, and on top of that, just a one-year contract, means Devin White is betting on himself. He believes if he can parlay it into a brilliant season, he could potentially win a Super Bowl and also a possible long-term contract.

Devin White left the Buccaneers on a sad note

That said, if he wanted to continue his fight for a Super Bowl, he could have stayed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But White mentioned, while talking on The Pivot, what made him lose faith in the franchise after handing in a trade request:

It was already downhill when I asked for the trade. Everybody loved me at first, but when I asked for the trade and tried to do what was best for me, that turned everybody against me. Not everybody, but some higher-up people.

He mentioned that the moment he put in a trade request, all the love for him was gone. He wanted to stay, but the franchise was not interested in a contract extension.

It seems, with no options left on the table, he had to leave. But in his heart, White would have preferred to stay with the team that drafted him with the 5th overall pick. After all, they were just a few more wins short of acing the goal last season. With most of the elite players returning, White could have attempted for another Super Bowl with them.

But with the Philadelphia Eagles, he gets the chance to reinvigorate his career. It has been four years since he was an All-Pro. Maybe with the star-studded defense, he can make his way back to being one of the best middle linebackers in the league.
