With no certainty on linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s return to the football field, the San Francisco 49ers are moving forward with a safe scenario in mind– planning the strategy while keeping his absence in mind at the start of the upcoming season.
That’s why, when the opportunity presented itself, the 49ers acquired former Green Bay Packers’ De’Vondre Campbell earlier in March, giving him ample amount of time to get accompanied by the team’s defensive strategies and system. For now, Campbell appears to be the franchise’s choice to pair him up with Fred Warner as the 2024 season begins.
When the 2021 All-Pro was asked about it, he said though he cannot say anything for sure as it’s not his decision, he is ready to do whatever the Niners would ask him to fill in for Greenlaw’s absence.
My goal right now is to try to learn as much as I can about this defense so I can help them. “Whatever is required of me, I'm going to be ready to impress the coaching staff. I want to get on the field because I know nothing is promised or guaranteed.De’Vondre Campbell said in an interview with 49ersWebzone.com
The former Packers’ defensive player revealed that when the 49ers approached him, he was happy to join a contender team and had no expectations from the franchise, whatsoever.
49ers confident in De’Vondre Campbell’s ability to step up
With their star linebacker still recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered in the Super Bowl game earlier in February. It became one of the biggest issues to address since the team is a Super Bowl favorite.
49ers linebacker Warner encouraged his team to put their faith in Campbell’s abilities to fill in the video of Greenlaw’s absence in the upcoming season.
The Niners’ OTAs and minicamp support Warner’s statements since the defensive player proved he is far more capable than he was initially perceived. To this point, the 49ers seem happy with their decision to sign Campbell in a one-year deal.
